Recently I was engaged to record a public lecture for an academic institution. The catch is, I have to do it cheap. I mean REAL CHEAP. They did not mind that the camera will not be mobile and that they will not have multiple angle of views. They only need two things. 1. Good image quality, 2. Good audio quality.
My set up.
So i thought to myself, this is a good time to be experimenting with my next-to-useless audio gears as well. For the video, I used my trusty 70D with my Sigma 18-35 F1.8 lens. Perfect combination for continuous focus and good optical quality with a large aperture. The room wasn't exactly well lit.
For audio i purchased a cheap Audio Technica ATR-3350 lav mic. The cable is extremely long. Allowing me to skim on using a wireless system. I run the long cable through the speakers jacket all the way to the camera, while still allowing him a relatively good amount of movement.
Problems.
1. The camera stops recording every 30 minutes. It resulted in me having to press record multiple times to continue recording which then leads to loss of small chunks of content. This was easily dealt with in post-production and the magic of dissolve.
2. The audio quality captured by the audio technica was not up to the standard i was hoping for. But for the price, I really can't complain. It allowed me to capture audio directly to my camera without any need for syncing.
Ultimately the client was happy with the final video. And all it cost me was spending $50 on a mic which I can use for future events such as this. Final videos can be seen in the link. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3BCJHPSlk4KO3vmWj7fdHQ
