The facebook & instagram boobs policy. Yay or nay?

Latest in the world of new media, women are fighting censorship of the female body on social media by covering their topless photos with so called 'acceptable' male nipples, highlighting the double standard that still exists between the sexes.

Artist Micol Hebron introduced the idea last June when she shared a photo of a male nipple template on her Facebook page, explaining: 'If you are going to post pictures of topless women, please use this acceptable male nipple template to cover over the unacceptable female nipples.'

A year later Micol's concept has taken the internet by storm as women continue to grow increasingly frustrated with their topless photos being removed from Instagram and Facebook.

I'm all for public decency, but this is CLEARLY  a double standard. Standards however, are not set by facebook or instagram, or even the internet. It is set primarily by society, people. With much of the influence coming from culture and religion.

As an academic, I tend not to mix religion/faith with societal trends. Writing here to propagate equality instead of feminism, social media today has two choices. To either follow the traditional mindset of believing that the display of the human body between male & female is unequal, or take the future leap in having all photos be equal, naked or otherwise.

Instagram is, if not one of the most prominent sites for photographers to display their work of art. As such, I say the hell with this unequal treatment of photos! Art is Art. Everybody is subjective on what art is and thats the beautiful thing about it. With nude photography being part of a growng art form, social media sites needs to grow some mature ballls and figure out a way to handle such images without taking on the assumption that they are offensive right off the bat.

Thats just my 2 cents..
